A term for advanced chronic kidney failure (Stage 5 CKD). People who develop ESRF will die within weeks (to three months) unless treated by dialysis or transplantation. These treatments control ESRF but cannot cure it. Once a patient has developed ESRF, they will always have it, even after a transplant. ‘End-stage renal disease (ESRD)’ and ‘established renal failure (ERF)’ are alternative names
