This is how to find your relative in hospital.
1. Visiting hours – check them before you go on the hospital website (or ring ward). They may be different on different wards.
2. Find them – this is quite easy. Approach the desk in reception and ask where they are. They will almost always know. If they don’t, they can find out with a couple of calls.
This is the simplest and quickest way.
3. Ring hospital switchboard – this is another way. It is often slower than just going there and asking, as suggested above. It can take a long time to get through and there may be better use of the switchboard operators time than finding relatives.
Other advice
- Do not visit if you have an infection. And wash your hands when you go on to the ward
- Do bring gifts but keep them small. They have to be taken home. And consider restrictions on them (e.g. flowers and food)
- Turn off your mobile phone
- Keep visits short, preferably under an hour. Patients can get tired very quickly
- Ask to speak to a doctor or nurse to get an update. But if they arrive and they need to do something, offer to leave.
