How to get emergency dental treatment

How to get emergency dental treatment

50% of the population do not go to the dentist. This partly why emergencies occur.

Whatever the cause, if you are in pain or in need of urgent help, please telephone your dental practice in the usual way. If you are not registered with a dentist you can go to https://www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-dentist or call NHS111.

This may be because you have severe toothache or a dental infection, or you have noticed other changes inside your mouth such as a white or red patch, a lump or an ulcer that won’t heal.

If you cannot get an appointment with your dentist, any high street dentist can see you in an emergency, and give you treatment. This may be a procedure (e.g. a filling, or to remove a tooth) or you may need advice and a prescription, which you can collect from your local pharmacy.

Out of hours service

NHS111 can tell you about the out of hours service (e.g. for weekends and bank holidays) and may even book an appointment for you.

There are also a smallish number of dental hospitals in the UK. Google ‘dental hospital’ to find one. They may be a 30-60 minute plus drive from where you live.
