What is gabapentin?

  • Type of drug: gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) analogue
  • Use: itching in CKD; chronic pain; epilepsy
  • Dose: in CKD, start low dose, e.g. 100mg alternate nights
  • Side-effects: confusion, drowsiness
  • Monitor: neuropsychological side-effects.
